I went to metaphor.org.uk and all I got...What people have said... Comment from Kevin O'Gorman One thing I'd be very, very careful about is using distraction as the metaphor for what one does with the conscious mind. There are much more collaborative functions for the conscious in conjunction with the unconscious than B & G ever learned. Moreover, 'distraction' is rife with control and tricking associations and serves to buttress folk theories of metaphor and hypnosis as manipulation -- an area of social responsibility B&G, and their successors, have still never adequately addressed. Finally, it allows practitioners to take roles in the process where, if they've not fully examined their ethics, often undermines full development of their clients -- a malfeasance by omission. Indeed, the distraction metaphor leaves open the possibility of outright abuse (no matter the intention or how often the notion of respect is mentioned conscious and unconscious levels). Perhaps there is something about how the mind works that is more open to larger choices... Comment from Chris Clayton, PsyD, DCH Hello, I wanted to write you to let you know that I really enjoyed your metaphor page. Are you still involved with metaphors? I've been practicing hypnosis for about 10 years, and I've focused on Erickson for about 2 years. I find it very difficult to find anyone who is proficient at using metaphors, and so I enjoyed your site very much. Comment from Alana Sacriponte, Pittsburgh, PA USA The only thing in life that is constant is change. We need these words of wisdom to help guide people to understand why and how this change happens. This is a fabulous site, with such pure, healthy reasoning for creating it. You are spectacular, and I will help spread the word as best I can. Comment from Yvonne I tripped over your website this evening...something brought me there (a link I guess :) ) and I am so glad now afterwards to have been there before - it is pure inspiration. Have you got something to say? to metaphor.org.uk |
